Popcorn ceilings were standard in a huge share of homes built before the mid-1980s, and a lot of Front Range houses from that era still have it. Removing it is a three-part job: scrape off the old texture, skim coat the ceiling to a smooth or lightly textured finish, and re-texture or paint to match the rest of the room.
Because popcorn ceiling texture installed before 1980 sometimes contains asbestos, we start with the testing conversation before any scraping begins on an older home. That's a safety step, not an upsell, and it protects everyone in the house during the work.
Once a ceiling is cleared for standard removal, we protect the room, wet-scrape to control dust, skim coat to smooth the surface, and finish with the texture (or smooth Level 5) you want going forward.

Homes built before the early-to-mid 1980s are the ones where it's worth testing before removal; newer homes are typically not a concern. We'll walk you through this based on your home's age before work starts.
What do you do instead of popcorn once it's removed?
Most homeowners go smooth (Level 5) or a lighter knockdown, we'll show you both in the room's actual lighting, since popcorn was often used partly to hide ceiling imperfections that a smooth finish won't.
How messy is the removal process?
We wet-scrape to keep dust down and protect floors and furniture before starting, but plan for the room to be out of use for the duration of the job.
